Crew Leader Job Position

The City of Exeter is seeking a skilled, hands-on, and team-oriented Crew Leader to support the daily field operations of the Public Works Department. This key position plays an important role in ensuring the effective maintenance and operation of essential City services, including water, wastewater, streets, parks, facilities, and stormwater systems.

About the Position

Under the direction of the Public Works Operations Manager, the Crew Leader provides task leadership and technical expertise to the Public Works crew. This position is responsible for organizing, prioritizing, and leading daily work activities while performing highly skilled maintenance, repair, and installation work in the field. The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-focused, and leads by example while working alongside the crew.

Salary: $4,410 – $5,361 per month (with an excellent benefits package)

Key Responsibilities

The Crew Leader will:

  • Lead and perform skilled Public Works work related to water distribution, wastewater collection, streets, parks, facilities, and stormwater systems
  • Plan, prioritize, and coordinate daily work assignments and work orders
  • Assign tasks, equipment, materials, and staffing needs for daily operations
  • Inspect work to ensure compliance with City standards, safety practices, and regulatory requirements
  • Operate City vehicles and equipment in the performance of assigned duties
  • Assist with emergency and after-hours response as needed
  • Maintain daily records, reports, and purchase documentation
  • Coordinate with contractors and assist with customer and service requests
  • Support the Operations Manager with inspections, troubleshooting, and operational improvements

The Ideal Candidate Is

  • Experienced in municipal or public works maintenance operations
  • Comfortable providing field leadership without formal supervision authority
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize work in a fast-paced environment
  • Safety-conscious and knowledgeable of PPE and safe work practices
  • Technically skilled across multiple Public Works disciplines
  • A clear communicator who works well with crew members, supervisors, contractors, and the public
