Code Enforcement Officer Job Position

The Code Enforcement Officer position, under general supervision, performs a variety of duties in support of the City’s code enforcement program, including the investigation, inspection, and enforcement of municipal codes and ordinances. This position responds to complaints related to property maintenance, zoning, signage, housing, public nuisances, and other code violations while promoting voluntary compliance and initiating enforcement actions when necessary.
This position requires discretion, independent judgment, and tact in frequent interactions with the public, City staff, and outside agencies.
This position may perform work related to:

Investigating complaints regarding municipal code violations and documenting findings

Conducting field inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial properties

Preparing and issuing notices of violation, warnings, citations, and correspondence

Coordinating enforcement actions with City departments, legal counsel, and other agencies

Conducting follow-up inspections to ensure compliance

Preparing cases for hearings or legal action and testifying in court when required

Providing guidance to residents, businesses, and the public regarding City codes and compliance requirements

Participating in public education and outreach regarding code enforcement
This position also supports the City’s animal control enforcement efforts, including responding to complaints involving animals, enforcing licensing and nuisance regulations, and coordinating with shelters and veterinarians as needed.
Work is performed in both office and field settings and may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions and contact with upset or noncompliant individuals.
Salary
The monthly salary range for this position is: $4,203 – $5,109 per month
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should possess a high school diploma or GED. College coursework in public administration, planning, law enforcement, or a related field is desirable.
Applicants should also have:

Two (2) years of experience in municipal code enforcement, inspection, regulatory compliance, or a related field

Strong customer service and conflict resolution skills

Ability to interpret, apply, and explain City codes and ordinances

Ability to prepare accurate reports and enforcement documentation
The position requires:

A valid California Class C Driver’s License
-
Ability to obtain a PC832 Laws of Arrest Certificate within three (3) months of appointment

Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as necessary
